Volkswind has officially begun construction of the Klein Vahlberg wind farm in Lower Saxony with a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony. Once completed in spring 2027, the project is expected to generate enough electricity to supply around 17,500 households.

The Klein Vahlberg wind farm, comprising five turbines with a total capacity of 30 megawatts, is being built in the district of Wolfenbüttel. Work is currently under way on access roads and crane pads. Delivery of the components and installation of the turbines are planned for early 2027, with completion of the wind farm scheduled for spring 2027. Once commissioned, the Vestas V150 turbines are expected to generate around 70 million kilowatt-hours of electricity each year.

Financial participation for local residents planned

In addition to generating renewable electricity, the wind farm is intended to offer people in the region a direct opportunity to participate financially in the project. A local energy cooperative is currently being established, through which residents will be able to take part in the regional energy transition.

“Local participation will strengthen the wind farm’s ties to the region. We want to give people here the opportunity to invest financially in the project,” says Simeon Ziegeler, Head of Project Development Germany at Volkswind.

An information event is planned for late autumn. Further details will be announced in due course.

Dedicated substation under construction

Volkswind is also building its own “Berklingen substation” to ensure that the electricity generated can be reliably fed into the public grid. Foundation work has been completed, and the transformer has already been delivered.

The substation is located around 600 metres from the wind farm. It will also connect the Uehrde wind farm, another Volkswind project currently under construction, around five kilometres away. The Berklingen substation will therefore bring together the electricity generated by both projects at a shared grid connection point.

Construction of the Klein Vahlberg wind farm follows several years of project development. The project received planning approval in December 2024 and was successful in last year’s auction under Germany’s Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG).
