At a symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Finland’s Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering, Joakim Strand, Axpo today officially inaugurated the Lålax wind farm in the municipality of Vörå. The company’s first onshore wind farm in Finland marks a significant step in expanding renewable energy in the Ostrobothnia region and sets the stage for further projects in the country.

At a glance

  • Axpo has commissioned its first wind farm in Finland, with a total installed capacity of 24.8 MW.
  • Its expected annual output of 70 million kilowatt-hours could meet the electricity needs of around 5,400 households.
  • The wind farm is an important contribution to the expansion of renewable energy in western Finland and supports the country’s ambitious climate targets.

Together with representatives from politics, public administration and the local community, Axpo today officially commissioned the Lålax wind farm in the Finnish municipality of Vörå. The guest of honour was Joakim Strand, Finland’s Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering. The inauguration celebrates Axpo’s first onshore wind farm in Finland and underlines the company’s strong commitment to the Finnish energy market.

Four Vestas turbines with a total capacity of 24.8 MW

The wind farm was technically commissioned in September 2025, after just eleven months of construction. It consists of four Vestas turbines, each with a rated capacity of 6.2 MW and a hub height of 134 metres. Their combined capacity is 24.8 MW.

With forecast annual output of around 70 million kilowatt-hours, the wind farm could theoretically supply clean electricity to approximately 5,400 Finnish households. The electricity is fed into the transmission grid via a purpose-built substation and marketed on the electricity exchange by Axpo Nordic.

Supporting climate targets

Finland is legally committed to achieving climate neutrality by 2035—one of the most ambitious targets worldwide. The project makes a tangible contribution to the local energy supply and the country’s climate targets, while also strengthening the position of the Ostrobothnia region as a centre for renewable energy.

Klaus Heckenberger, CEO of Volkswind and Head of Axpo’s Wind division, highlighted the project’s significance: “The inauguration of the Lålax wind farm is a special moment for us. It is our first wind energy project in Finland and the starting point for what is still to come. In recent years, we have built an attractive project pipeline in the country and look forward to our next projects.”

Joakim Ingves, Managing Director of Axpo Renewable Finland Oy, praised the work of the local team: “We are proud to have successfully completed our first wind farm in Finland. The project is the result of the excellent work of our team in Vaasa and close collaboration with the municipality and the landowners. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to making this project a reality.”

The new wind farm also represents an important step for the municipality of Vörå. Jan Finne, Municipal Chief Executive of Vörå, said:

“The municipality of Vörå is very pleased with its collaboration with Axpo. This investment is an important step in the development of our municipality and, together with Axpo, contributes to a sustainable and secure energy supply for the future.”

Wind energy up close: information, insights and dialogue

In the afternoon, Axpo also opened the wind farm to members of the public from the region. Many visitors took the opportunity to see the site for themselves and learn more about the project’s technology, operations and significance. The programme included guided tours of the turbines, activities for children and refreshments.

By opening the site to the public, Axpo reaffirmed its commitment to delivering renewable energy projects transparently and actively encouraging dialogue with local communities.

Volkswind expertise provides the foundation

The project draws on the extensive experience of Axpo subsidiary Volkswind, which has been part of the Axpo Group since 2015. Together, Axpo and Volkswind teams have developed more than 100 wind farms in Germany and France, representing over 1,600 MW of installed capacity. This expertise is now being applied to the Finnish market.
