Wind energy in Finland 2023

Volkswind-Wind energy in Finland

The expansion of wind energy in Finland continues to make rapid progress. According to the Finnish Wind Energy Association’s latest annual statistics, 2023 proved to be the second strongest year in the history of wind power construction in Finland. During the year, 212 new wind turbines were commissioned, making Finland a major player in the renewable energy sector.

The pace of expansion will continue to accelerate in the coming years as new wind energy projects are actively developed both onshore and offshore. With a total of 1,601 wind turbines, Finland now has a cumulative capacity of 6,946 megawatts (MW), which corresponds to a capacity increase of 212 turbines and 1,280 MW in 2023.

Regional distribution

The development of wind energy is still strongly concentrated in the mid-west of Finland, such as Northern Ostrobothnia and other regions of Österbotten. In 2023, the regions of Northern Ostrobothnia, Ostrobothnia and South Ostrobothnia will have the most new power plants. Axpo Renewables Finland will also build its first 25 MW wind farm in the Ostrobothnia region in Vörå municipality. The Finnish Wind Energy Association expects a further increase of around 1,000 MW in 2024, and almost 1,500 MW of new wind power capacity has already been announced for 2025.
