Volkswind GmbH has been building wind farms in Europe for over 30 years. Now, the company’s 100th wind farm is being built in Uehrde, Lower Saxony. Once completed, this anniversary project will supply environmentally friendly electricity to 12,000 four-person households and, together with the other Volkswind farms, make a significant contribution to the expansion of climate-friendly electricity generation in Europe.
Volkswind GmbH has officially started construction of its 100th wind farm with a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony. The anniversary project, with a total capacity of 18.6 megawatts, is being built in Uehrde in the district of Wolfenbüttel in Lower Saxony. Completion of all three new Vestas turbines is planned for autumn 2026. The turbines will then feed around 48 million kilowatt hours of environmentally friendly electricity into the grid via their own substation. This is enough to cover the electricity needs of around 12,000 four-person households.
‘We are incredibly proud and delighted about our 100th wind farm anniversary project. Over 30 years ago, we started out with a vision of creating clean energy for a sustainable future, and this milestone brings us another step closer to our goal,’ said Katja Stommel, managing director and co-founder of Volkswind. ‘Our wind farms, with around 600 wind turbines, now avoid several million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year and supply around 800,000 four-person households with clean electricity.’
In addition to these positive and valuable contributions to climate protection, Volkswind has now created 200 jobs and the company continues to grow strongly.
One of the significant milestones was the takeover of Volkswind in 2015 by the Swiss energy company Axpo. Today, Volkswind is represented in Germany and France with twelve of its own branches. Volkswind has established itself as one of the leading providers, particularly in the French market. In 2022, the company expanded into Finland and Romania together with Axpo.
The signs point to continued growth in the future: following successful market entries in Finland and Romania, Volkswind plans to expand into other countries. Wind energy is set to undergo further massive expansion by 2030. Katja Stommel believes the company is well equipped for this: “One hundred wind farms are a great success. But we see this as just the beginning. The demand for sustainable energy continues to grow, and we are driven to realise many more projects and thus drive forward the energy transition.”
