Wind power pioneer has been committed to the energy transition for three decades
Volkswind: 30 years full of energy Wind power pioneer has been committed to the energy transition for three decades Ganderkesee, 2023_06_24 The Ganderkese-based wind power project company Volkswind celebrates its 30th anniversary. For three decades, the company has been developing, building and operating wind farms throughout Europe and has been successfully committed to the energy transition. Volkswind was founded in June 1993 by Martin Daubner, Matthias and Katja Stommel, making it one of the pioneers in the field of renewable energies. What began in 1993 as a 3-person operation has now transformed into a leading wind farm developer in Europe. Today, more than 500 wind turbines in 80 wind farms with a total capacity of 1,500 megawatts produce clean electricity for around 800,000 four-person households. “The accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant showed us at the time how dangerous nuclear power is. It wasn’t about market share or making a fortune. With the construction of our first wind turbine, we simply wanted to show new ways in energy supply,” reports Katja Stommel, Volkswind CEO. “At the time, we were ridiculed as eco-nuts for this. We didn’t expect that we would be so successful.” One of the important milestones is the acquisition of the company in 2015 by the Swiss energy company Axpo. In the meantime, the international wind activities of the Swiss conglomerate are being driven forward from Ganderkesee. Today, Volkswind is represented by its own subsidiaries in Germany and France. Volkswind is the market leader in the French market. In 2022, the company opened two new locations in Finland and Romania together with Axpo. The signs also point to growth in the future: after Finland and Romania, the market entry into other countries is planned. By 2030, Volkswind wants to continue to massively expand wind energy. Company founder Katja Stommel believes the company is well equipped for the future. “Our pioneering spirit has always been decisive for Volkswind’s success. This has remained with us to this day. Especially in the wind industry, you have to adapt quickly to changing conditions and be adaptable. We still enjoy the challenge and that’s what sets us apart.”
